SOUTHEAST UMPIRING

Welcome to Southeast Field Hockey Association (SEFHA) umpiring.  Our Association assists in the development and training of umpires within the Southeast Section.  Our annual Umpiring Conference provides an opportunity for National, Sectional, and selected Local umpires to gain pre-season practice, be critiqued, and receive current rules updates and interpretations.

You must be a member of the United States Field Hockey Association (USFHA) and the SEFHA to participate in any SEFHA activity.   All questions and comments regarding SEFHA umpiring activities and policies should be directed to the Umpiring Chair, Janice Bledsoe.

Umpire Registration

SEFHA Registration:  Please complete the Umpire Registration Form.  After “clicking” the submit button, you will be returned a completed registration form.  Print the form, attach a $4.00 check payable to SEFHA, and mail both items to the Janice Bledsoe (for the mailing address, contact Janice Bledsoe).

USFHA Registration: The USFHA registration form is available at (USFHA link).  The USFHA registration form, with the applicable payment, should be submitted directly to USFHA.

Umpire Ratings

There are three umpire rating levels awarded by USFHA-affiliated associations – Apprentice, Local, and Sectional.  National ratings are only awarded by USFHA.  See “Umpire Ratings” for a description of Apprentice, Local, and Sectional rating requirements.  Umpires interested in standing for a National rating must contact the USFHA National Ratings Chair, Sally Edinger.

Sectional Ratings

New and renewal Sectional ratings are awarded by SEFHA.

New Sectional ratings:  Local umpires wanting to stand for a Sectional rating must:

  1. Submit a completed Application for a New Sectional Rating form  to the SEFHA Umpiring Chair .  Applications must be received by the Umpiring Chair prior to the rating event.
  1. Submit recommendations using the new Sectional Recommendation Form.  New candidates must provided recommendations from one of the following umpire combinations:
    1. Two National or active FIH Umpires
    2. Two Sectional Umpires and One National or active FIH Umpire
    3. Three Sectional Umpires

Note: The umpires providing the recommendations do not have to be members of SEFHA.  However, each umpiring providing a recommendation must complete an individual recommendation form

3.   New Sectional candidates will be rated at either the Umpiring Conference (on a space available basis) or the Southeast Tournament.

Renewal Sectional ratings:  Umpires renew their Sectional rating at the Southeast Tournament. Umpires standing at the Southeast Tournament must be available both days of the tournament in the event of rain.  Renewing umpires must pay SEFHA dues for each year of their rating and must have the appropriate number of service points prior to standing for a renewal.

Umpire Service

All Sectional and National umpires are required to provide service to their Section.  SEFHA requires that National and Sectional umpires earn service “points” to be in good standing with the Section and thus eligible for renewal.  The service “point” requirements are as follows:

  • Two-year renewal (new Sectional renewals and new National renewals) – two service points must be earned within the two-year rating period.
  • Four-year renewal (renewing four-year Sectionals and renewing four-year Nationals) – three service points must be earned within the four-year rating period.
  • New National candidates – candidates standing prior to their Sectional renewal date must earn:  1 point if standing the year after their Sectional award/renewal; 2 points if standing two years after their Sectional award/renewal; and 3 points if standing three or four years after their Sectional award/renewal.

National umpires who do not renew their National rating must renew at the Sectional level.  Sectional umpires who do not renew their Sectional rating must renew at the Local level.

One service “point” is earned by:

  • Umpiring at the Southeast HS Showcase (full day)
  • Umpiring at the Southeast Association Playdays (full day)
  • Umpiring at the Southeast Association Championship (full day)
  • Umpiring at the Southeast Tournament (full day)
  • Providing umpiring training to Southeast club players at Local Association practice sessions (for more information on this service opportunity, contact Janice Bledsoe).

Note:  umpires who attend the above events for ½ day receive ½ service point.

Two service “points” are earned by:

  • Working as a clinician at a Southeast-affiliated umpire clinic.  Umpire clinicians will receive two “service points” for each full day umpiring clinic. Note:  clinician work preformed for private camps, local umpiring associations, college associations, high school associations, and USFHA does not count towards Southeast service.
  • Serving as “head umpire” at a Southeast Association Playday.  Contact Janice Bledsoe for more information on this service opportunity.

Three service “points” are earned by volunteering to list yourself as one of the SEFHA team umpires at the National Hockey Festival.  Please note the following:

  • Any umpire who is registered as the SEFHA Hockey Festival umpire will not receive the additional stipend offered by USFHA.  You will receive your game fees from USFHA.
  • Any umpire who is registered as the SEFHA Hockey Festival umpire will not receive any additional stipend from SEFHA.  You will receive your game fees from USFHA.
  • Any umpire interested in this service option should contact Janice Bledsoe

Examples of activities which DO NOT count towards service:

  • Service to a college board or conference
  • Service to USFHA or another Section
  • Service to a Local umpiring board
  • Post season collegiate appointments
  • USFHA appointments
  • Service at Indoor Hockey events

We look forward to seeing you on the pitch!!
